End of this Blog

Hi loyal followers.

I have decided to take a break from posting here for a while. It was easy to do cause of all the other posting I have been doing on Tumblr and Facebook. It has taken me some time to figure out how to end a blog. I think that just leaving it alone is not good enough. So I have decided to leave a note to alert everyone. On Nov. 1, I will delete it from the web.

This Guy Is An Animal

Introducing Ted Rhodes

We photographed Ted Rhodes here in 511 a while back. Below are some examples. When looking back over this work, there is one visual aspect that keeps hitting me over the head. Can anyone tell how tall he is from this picture?

Table 4Sale. Serious Buyers Please.

Now that my daughter has started to move around the apt, my wife and I are feeling a bit crammed. So, I'm trying to sell some of our stuff on Craigslist to make room. One item, in particular, is a table that I bought at the same time I was photographing, "Garage Sale America."

I had a lot of options in photographing this object ranging from the amount of work to the amount of success. I could 1) bring the table to the studio, set up the lights, etc. Degree of difficulty: 10 of 10; degree of success ?. I could 2) bring the studio home and spend some time making sure it is photograph is an accurate representation of the table. Degree of difficulty: 8 of 10; degree of success ?. Camera phone composite with red number overlay. Degree of difficulty: 2 of 10; degree of success ?

Will let you all know how it goes.

Baby Starting to Crawl

FYI. This actually happened.

Baby with food stuck to face - This is a reenactment

My daughter has been learning how to eat over the past few months and, honestly, I'm surprised at how little she has learned. Really, as a Crary, I expected her to be a pro right out of the gate.

Anyway, she still gets food stuck to her face and doesn't seem to know how to take the next step. Get it in the mouth.

Disclaimer - This photograph is a reenactment of an actual event.

Very Busy, Very Busy, Very Busy

Photographers talk about this all the time. Things just pile up until management has time to get to it.

I am happy to report, I now have time to sort through the seemingly endless pile. Be on the lookout for some interesting posts.

Tuckerman's Ravine - It's worth the climb - Part II

While I have been busy showing off the images from Tuckerman's I had one 'peach of an image' that I wanted to share. And for those of you who will be seeing my portfolio in the near future, this image did not make the cut, even though, I desperately wanted it to.

Remember, the climbers have been drinking all day.

Tuckerman's Ravine - It's worth the climb

Fresh in from a Tuckerman's Ravine hike and shoot.

I always wondered why I never see good photographs of Tuckerman's. It is sooo steep, you would have to be crazy to take out your camera, let alone drag one up the face. As you can guess, I did it anyway.

Below is the postcard for the up and coming edit. Back to you tomorrow for the entire show.

Table Top Update.

For those of you who have been following my commercial career, you know about my new table top aspirations. In the case of the latest couple of entries, it looks like the cheese chapter of the portfolio is coming together nicely.

To tell the truth, after I took this picture, I became a sculptor knowing that underneath every block of moldy cheese, a great representation of the human condition is revealed.

In this case, a grilled cheese sandwich.

Cheesy Does It.

In my quest to eat as much cheese as possible, I took a job making pictures of cheese on white for Columbia Cheese. I must share these pictures and a quick note.

Note: My studio still smells like feet.

Who's Foot Is That?

After an overwhelming response to this picture of Magalie eating her foot, I wanted to post it for all to see.

My favorite response is from Seri, "Whose foot is that?"

It's amazing how small my car looks from 57ft up.

I was on location last week where a cherry picker was needed to get the right shot. After negotiating with parties, I was able to have one on set a 7am. Just in time for the wind to pick up.

When I was taking this photograph, I was confronted with excitement and dread all at once. The bitter cold and early morning wind reminded me of the natural forces that dominate the planet and the thought of this 57ft cherry picker being me only salvation was conflicting. I knew in my mind that I would eventually be on the ground again but my heart knew that this object was no match for the natural forces around me.

As you can see, fact prevailed and fiction was left for the weary.

I have to give my beautiful wife, Phoebe, the credit for this picture. Her flower designs are as beautiful as she is.

Here are some recent peices of work that left Opalia this past weekend.

Another, "You haven't made it until..."

Talent & Retouching

I want to introduce my readers to a talent. In addition to being one of NYC most talented retouchers, Liam Collins, of Rubber Fish Art, can draw. See the recent posts on his blog (HERE).

Liam has been in the art business for a long time and his methods have been a true inspiration. It helps to remind me that we are making art in this business and it is all relevant. Beautiful work Liam and thanks for sharing.
